Background info:
Our first special release for the year and one that was definitely worth all the effort to bring over. Our friends from Archers out in the UAE were kind enough to offer this special lot to us for our special occasion. We brought this coffee in for two reasons; one was to offer it to one of our Cedar Family members competing at the Western Cape Barista Competition and the second was for us to showcase this gem at Cape Town's Specialty Coffee Expo.
We are happy to report that this coffee has officially won 1st place at the Western Cape Barista Competition but let's give you more insight into the coffee in question.
This Bombe Village lot is housed under Daye Bensa Coffee Company started by two brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo. These brothers are constantly pushing for excellence from humble beginnings started out with one small office and washing station to becoming one of Ethiopia's Top 5 exporting companies. Daye Bensa Coffee is the 2022 2nd Place Winner of the Ethiopia Cup of Excellence
This particular lot is home to a community of 700 farmers that work in partnership with Daye Bensa which post-harvest. The varietals of this lot JARC (Jimma Agricultural Research Center) developed cultivars 74110 and 74112. The process is natural and it is anaerobically fermented for 72 hours which we believe intensifies the flavour profile.
This is a coffee that can be described in so many ways because of its complexity. We got so much sweet florals on the aroma - jasmine, lavender and more. Then the fruit cocktail burst of pineapple, watermelon, strawberry, litchi, kiwi, the list goes on (although we had to narrow it down to a few specifics on the bag). In milk you’d need to go for a low cup volume to get the best balance and when achieving this we got sweet strawberry wafer. What a treat
