Farm/Producer: Intango Washing Station
Region: Rwanda, Karongi Gishyita
Altitude: 1500-1900 masl
Cup Profile: Floral, citrus, notes of honey, light toffee, and blood orange
This farm had been part of the Rwandan Cup of Excellence 2014, situated on the edge of Lake Kivu. After much success, it became run down as the cooperative dissolved. It has recently been taken over by Gilbert Gatali and his best friend Gervais as they look to revitalize this washing station back to the standards it once was.
Gilbert came back to his homeland as a coffee importer seeking to help the hundreds of farmers improve their quality as manager of Rwanda's first farmer-owned specialty coffee export company. ‘Intango’ itself is Kinyarwanda for “beginning”: Gilbert’s intention was to create a communal starting point for farmers, staff, and community to come together, grow and change their lives positively.
Coffee is hand-picked, disc pulped, wet fermented overnight, washed and soaked with mountain water, then sun-dried on raised beds
